Thanks in part to the use of the addictive first single "Nice Day" in a national ad campaign for a hotel chain, San Francisco alternative-pop quartet Persephone's Bees gained immediate attention for their 2006 debut album, NOTES FROM THE UNDERWORLD. Russian-born singer and keyboardist Angelina Moysov is a photogenic Chrissie Hynde lookalike whose subtly accented vocals strongly recall the icy deadpan of Stereolab's Laetitia Sadier. Her primary foil, guitarist Tom Ayres, fills the songs with hooks and riffs that recall all manner of indie rock favorites from the Stone Roses and New Order to the Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine, but the influences never overwhelm the strongly melodic songs. Despite the ominous name, NOTES FROM THE UNDERWORLD is a peppy, summery pop blast. minimize
