Born in Hell [PA] (CD - 2006)

There's a famous scene in This Is Spinal Tap when movie director Marty DiBergi is reading the bandmembers some choice reviews from throughout their career, one of which describes their music as "Treading water in a sea of retarded sexuality and bad poetry." And while you can't say that Viking Skull are treading water just yet -- 2006's Born in Hell is their debut album -- the latter certainly could certainly be said about their lyrics. Just take a gander at the song titles to predict their accompanying lyrics -- "Crank the Volume," "Beers Drugs and Bitches," "Dirty Dirty Hole," and "Inject My Woman (With Love)." Surely, G.G. Allin would approve. Musically, Viking Skull specialize in down 'n' dirty biker rock -- picture a mixture of Motörhead and early Guns N' Roses (minus the latter's arena-swooning choruses), and you're pretty close to the mark. Too bad Beavis & Butt-Head are in retirement; Viking Skull would surely be their favorite new band. ~ Greg Prato
