Although David Phelps has strong ties to the old-fashioned revival-style music of Bill Gaither's worship community, the singer's solo releases fall solidly into the contemporary pop/rock vein. Although most of Phelps's songs are explicitly about praising God, the immediately catchy "Something's Gotta Change" is an uplifting secular tune that could easily fit on Top 40 radio. Another highlight of LIFE IS A CHURCH proves to be the title track--a sunny, amiable song that features gospel touches and a soaring chorus. Those seeking Christian music that conveys its message with subtlety and grace will be well served by this accessible and enjoyable record. minimize
