Some 16 years separated the releases of Chastisement and Freedom Express, both found on this two-fer; the former, from 1972, is by far the stronger of the two -- recorded with former jazz drummer Suliaman El Hadi, it added jazz and funk to the group's fix to forge a new sound which they dubbed "jazzoetry." 1988's Freedom Express was the re-formed group's second comeback LP, and although it lacks the potency of their earlier work, it's still worth hearing. ~ Jason Ankeny minimize
