This is Byron Lee's 18th annual release of the year's hottest soca tunes and his formula of collecting all the straight forward hits is beginning to show a little wear. With other compilations now rounding out the competition, (such as the excellent Soca Gold 99) Lee's conventional selections pale in comparison to edgier, more experimental offerings. With the exception of the latin-flavored "Kitty Kat, " and the odd "Hawaii 5-0 Swing Medley, " which includes the TV theme mixed with 50s classics such as "Jailhouse Rock, " and "Twist Again, " this is pretty run of the mill, if danceable material. ~ Rosalind Cummings-Yeates minimize
