Since their departure from EMI for Warner Bros. after 1989's MOTHER'S MILK, the Red Hot Chili Peppers' former label has issued several collections (including 1994's OUT IN L.A., 1998's ESSENTIAL), with the best of the bunch being the 1992 WHAT HITS? compilation. While it's not a thorough greatest-hits collection (only one song from their post-EMI years is included, "Under the Bridge"), it is highly recommended to Chili Peppers newcomers who are unfamiliar with the music from their formative years. Such punk-funk classics as "Higher Ground," "Fight Like a Brave," "Get Up and Jump," "Taste the Pain," "Knock Me Down," and the psychedelic "Behind the Sun" are standouts.
