Although Patty Loveless is often lumped in with the neo-traditionalists of the 1980s and '90s, her appeal has always been in her ability to blend rootsy country elements with pop and rock strategies. 1990's ON DOWN THE LINE is a perfect example of this, mixing up bits of honky tonk, folk, country-rock, and radio-friendly pop without ever sacrificing quality or integrity. Her cover of Lucinda Williams's plaintive "The Night's Too Long," is a highlight here, as is the honky-tonking "I've Got to Stop Loving You (And Start Living Again)." Elsewhere, Loveless applies a bit of muscle ("I'm That Kind of Girl") and slows things down ("Some Morning Soon"), but, per usual, she is spot-on in her performances, creating a distinctive brand of country that is as pure as it is wide in its appeal. minimize
