In 1901, one diver died and two more were paralyzed attempting to salvage some mysterious pieces from the cargo of an ancient Greek shipwreck. What they found may change everything we know about the ancient world. Fragments of the Antikythera device indicate that it may have been the world's first computer, and it is more than a thousand years older than any similar mechanism. Perhaps more remarkably, the purpose of the device has baffled modern science for more than a century, despite the efforts of curious parties such as Arthur C. Clarke and Jacques Cousteau.
