The First Self-made Female Millionaire, 1867-1919. Sarah Breedlove was born on a plantation in Delta, Louisiana on December 23, 1867. Her parents were ex-slaves who became share croppers. A share cropper is a person who farms on rented land. Sarah was orphaned at the age of six and was raised by an older sister. She had no formal education. Sarah was married at age fourteen to Mr. Walker. She was widowed by the age of twenty. After her husband died, she lived with her daughter in St. Louis. Together, they supported themselves for eighteen years as washer women. It was there, in St. Louis, that Sarah began thinking about hair products that would grow hair after she began to lose her own. Using her own wash tubs, she began developing, mixing and inventing products. When she was safisfied with her ointments and a special curling iron she invented, she began marketing her product line door-to-door. In a brilliant marketing move, she changed her name by adding the word Madame. She became known as Madame C.J. Walker. Wherever Madame C.J. Walker went her products were instant successes. The Madame C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company was soon born. Madame Walker hired hundreds of women to sell her products door-to-door. She created jobs for many African American women. She became very wealthy and was the first, self-made woman millionaire, of any color, in the United States. Piece Count: 24.
