The music and (especially) the image of Dream are custom-made to ignite sexual fantasies in the minds of adolescent males, and to inspire worship in the hearts of adolescent girls who'd like nothing more than to have the same effect on their testosterone-crazed peers that this teen-pop quintet has. The girls' debut was overseen by Sean "Puffy" Combs, who managed to avoid prosecution long enough to put all the right elements in place to make IT WAS ALL A DREAM a success. The girls themselves are identified--in classic teen-pop fashion--only by their first names, but how many surnames could anyone ever recall in the heyday of, say, the Bay City Rollers? From the percolating techno-derived rhythm of the opening track to the Kraftwerk-on-speed intro of "What We Gonna Do About Us," every trick in the book is employed on these tracks, the electronics merging with Dream's patented girl-group harmonies for a hit-bound sound. minimize
