With its George Michael-goes-argyle cover, this 1984 album looks as if it could have easily placed Michael W. Smith in the pop charts of the day. Although the Christian music icon's crossover success wouldn't come until years later, MICHAEL W. SMITH 2 does gild the performer's songs of faith with bright, synth-driven arrangements that foretell his later fortunes, most notably on the uplifting "I Am Sure" and the serene "Glorious Grace." While Smith neophytes will want to pick up 1992's GO WEST, YOUNG MAN or his FIRST DECADE compilation, those wanting to venture deeper into his catalogue will likely be pleased by this thoroughly amiable outing. minimize
