After the death of his wife, a 70-year-old Norwegian man, Trond, returns to an icy cabin in the east of Norway, where he spent his childhood. When he meets his reclusive neighbor, Lars, Trond suddenly remembers a teenage adventure when his friend Jon invited him to steal a horse and go riding in the early morning. Shortly after that Jon disappeared and it was discovered that he had accidentally killed his twin brother, Odd. Lars, it turns out, was Jon and Odd's third brother.
