A shy, spacey boy who longs to be an actor, 12-year-old Leo is often lost in elaborate daydreams were he replays negative experiences, turning them into triumphant ones. He craves love and affection from his loud, argumentative Italian-American family. Instead, his brothers and sisters tease him mercilessly, calling him fog boy and sardine, and his overextended parents yell at him for just about everything. Even his role as the Old Crone in the school play is cause for comment. On discovering his father's diary from age 13, Leo begins to think about how people change as they age and starts to understand that perhaps he isn't such an outsider in his family after all.
