Recorded live at Teatro Joao Caetano, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil in August, 1997.
QUANTA LIVE won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best World Music Album.
A live recording which finds Gilberto Gil mixing up many songs from his QUANTA album with some older songs and a couple of Bob Marley tunes. Some of the tunes from the QUANTA studio recording, such as "Vendedor de Caranguejo" and "Quanta," benefit greatly from their live interpretations, with Gil's band adding new energy to the compositions. The older songs, among them "Refavela" and the Tropicalia classic "Cerebro Electronico," blend in well with the new material, with the latter getting an appropriately funky treatment from the band.
QUANTA LIVE is notable for the tightness of Gil's backing band and his amazing vocal work. Generally, it's more extrovert than ACOUSTIC and more elaborate than Gil's live records from the '60s and '70s. As with anything in which Gil is involved, his impeccable taste and ability to fuse seemingly incongruous elements shine through.
